About Akwa Ibom State |
Akwa Ibom State is located in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria. It has a population
of 3,920,208 and a land area of 6,900 sq Km. It is located between latitudes 4°
32’ and 5° 33’ north and longitudes 7° 25’ and 8° 25’ east. It comprises 31 kocal
government areas. Uyo is state capial. Major urban centres include Uyo, Eket, Ikot
Ekpene, Abak, Ikot Abasi and Oron. Major ethnic groups are Ibibio, Anang, Oron,
Eket, and Mbo. The vegetation is characterised by three easily distinguishable types
namely the saline water swamp forest, the fresh water swamp and the rain forest.

Government |
Akwa Ibom State government is comprised of three equal and independent branches,
the executive, legislative, and judiciary. The executive branch administers the
laws through organs of the executive council, ministries and local government and
is overseen by the Governor.
The legislative branch makes laws, a responsibility
carried out by a 26-member House of Assembly headed by the Speaker.
And the judicial
branch, headed by the Chief Judge, preserves the rule of law by resolving disputes
through the courts.
There are also many forms and levels of local governance in
Akwa Ibom State. These include the Local government Councils and the Traditional
Councils.

People

Akwa Ibom State is made up of a homogenous group of people believed to have originated
from a single ancestral stock. The languages spoken in the state are closely related,
and the Annang and Ibibio languages are mostly identical with a few dialectical
differences.

The 30 local government atreas in Akwa Ibom State are hosts to hotels, hospitals,
schools, banls, and tourist attractions. The state has a great network of
roads that make the entire state easily accessible from any corner by land

Akwa Ibom State with a landmass of 6,900 sq Km is endowed with enormous wealth.
The land is arable from the saline water swamp forest in the South, to the rainforest
in the North and supports extensive agriculture all year round.
There are large deposits of oil and gas both on and offshore. Other mineral resources
such as limestone, clay, gold, salt, coal, silver nitrate and glass sand are also
found in commercial quantity.

Investment opportunities abound in Akwa Ibom State in areas of commerce, industries,
agriculture, housing, hotels and tourism. The state government has given incentives
for the development of medium and large scale industries. Through the generous provision
of condusive environment to encourage local and foreign investors.

Akwa Ibom shares boundary on the North with Cross River and Imo States, on the south
with the Atlantic Ocean. To the east with Cross River State and to the south-west
with Rivers and Imo States. The location of Akwa Ibom just north of the Equator
and within the humid tropics and its proximity to the sea makes the state generally
humid. On the basis of its geographical location the climate of Akwa Ibom State
can be described as a tropical rainy type which experiences abundant rainfall with
very high temperature.

The Executive Branch of Akwa Ibom State Government has the Governor, Deputy Governor,
and all cabinet members. The Governor is allowed to pass or veto a bill that the
legislative sends him. His assent is required for all bills passed by the House
of Assembly before they can become law.
The Executive conducts the government, deciding on policy and administering legislation.
All important government policy decisions and legislative proposals either come
from or are agreed to by cabinet. Cabinet also co-ordinates the activities of commissioners.
Cabinet consists of commissioners appointed by the Governor. These commissioners
are usually responsible for one or more government departments supervised by Permanent
Secretaries.

Akwa Ibom State Legislatives have a chamber called the House of Assembly. 26 members
are elected by citizens from across the state for a four year term to represent
them in government.
The house responsibilties are to debate and pass legislation, provide a government,
supervise the government's administration by requiring it to explain policies and
actions, supply funds and represent the views

Judiciary

The Judiciary explains and applies the laws. This branch does this by hearing and
eventually making decisions on various legal cases.
The judicial branch is in charge of the court system. there are three different
courts, the magistrate court, the high court, and the court of appeal.
The Judiciary is independent and free from political interference. Judges are appointed
by the Governor.

Akwa Ibom State ministries are government departments for sectoral service delivery
by the executive branch of the state government.
Most ministries are housed in the Idongesit Nkanga Secretariat complex. Each ministry
is headed by a commissioner appointed by the governor. the commissioners work with
the permanent secretaries and directors of the ministries. The staff of the ministries
are civil service employees headed by the Head of Civil Service.

Princess Anne Inyang, the gospel singer of the popular
Akwa Ibom State local government supports grassroots participation in government
and ensures development at the local level and rural areas of the state.
The local governments are overseen by an appointed commissioner for local government
and chieftaincy affairs who overseas elected local government chairmen and people
represented paramount rulers.

Akwa Ibom State Government pursues a policy of diversified investment for a convergence
of multi sectored infrastructure development for rapid economic growth. Government
is leaving no stone unturned in the provision of physical and organizational structures
needed for the operation of a modern Akwa Ibom society and enterprise, as well as
the services and facilities necessary for the Akwa Ibom economy to function optimally.
Government is desirous of an increasing proportion of private investment in financing
the State's infrastructure development being critical for the state to be part of
Vision 2020.

The Government of Akwa Ibom State believes that human dignity is a true measure
of human development and therefore has adopted a multidimensional approach to the
development of the dignity of the Akwa Ibom citizen.
With the governments promotion
of gender equality, child rights, free and compulsory education, elevated staff
welfare, improved livelihood, decent labour relations, promotion of local culture
and inclusive governance the government has attributed greater respect to the dignity
of persons placing them at liberty for rapid personal, community and social development.

Government is favourably disposed to top grade service delivery to ensure citizens
enjoy the full benefit of the state's resources. By creating distinct service handles
government has deployed cutting edge service modules at all service points such
as Operation Aduma on security, EARCOM for social reorientation, bureau of cooperative
development for cooperative societies among others.

In line with his promise and avowed mission of impacting positively on the lives
of the people, His Excellency, the Executive Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Chief
(Dr.) Godswill Akpabio had on Saturday, January 10th 2009 flagged-off the inauguration
of over 550 life transforming projects across the State.
Specifically, the inauguration exercise began in Ikot Ekpene Senatorial District
with the newly-constructed Cardinal Ekanem Road, and other projects, including
a 7-classroom block,

Akwa Ibom State mega projects have economic impact rippling beyond the shores of
the State up to the nation, the region and the international community as a whole.
These are projects that will involve large scale macro economic benefits as they
affect more sectors of the state's economy and require a larger population mix to
realise.
These projects will involve technical partners who will further invest through the
state's Public Private Partnership (PPP) or Build, Operate and Transfer (BOT) arrangement.
