02 Nov 2012: Ernest Akpan

The Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly in her plenary confirmed the nomination of Lady Valerie Ebe as the Deputy Governor of Akwa ibom State. The Governor of Akwa Ibom, Chief Godswill in his letter with Ref: GO/AKS/S.45/84 addressed to the Speaker of Akwa ibom State House of Assembly, Rt.Hon. Samuel Ikon, appointed Lady Valerie Ebe as the new Deputy Governor in pursuant to section 191(3)of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 as amended.

Mr Nsima Ekere resigned from office some days ago on personal grounds, held the office of the Deputy Governor of the State whose office as the Deputy Governor became vacant by reason of his resignation

Lady Ebe had served in the administration of the immediate past governor of the state, Obong Victor Attah as Commissioner in the board of Ethical and Attitudinal Reorientation Commission (EARCON). The new Deputy Governor designate who is from Mkpat Enin Local Government Area in Eket Senatorial District had equally served as the legal adviser to State Chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party, during Governor Attah regime. She was again appointed by Akpabio as Commissioner for Environment and during a minor cabinet re-organization she was moved to the Ministry of Culture and Tourism as Commissioner where she finally bowed out.

The Acting Clerk of the House, Mrs Mandu Umoren read the message from the Governor.

Rt Hon. Ekong Sampson, the member representing Mkpat Enin state constituency and other members spoke glowingly on why Lady Ebe should be cleared for the position. They described her as very intelligent, humble and hard working woman. The lawmakers equally noted that the administration of Governor Akpabio has a soft spot for women and widows in the state. They were equally opstimistic that Ebe, having worked with the state government before, has the capacity to add value to the uncommon transformation agenda of the government.

The lawmakers unanimously agreed that she should be cleared and asked her to take a bow and leave.

However, in asking her to take a bow, the Speaker, Elder Samuel Ikon thanked the governor for the choice of Ebe, but advised her to operate within the ambiance of her office stressing that the House will not hesitate to caution her if she's found wanting in the course of her duty.
