21 Oct 2009
Oron Local Government Council has put in place appropriate machinery to explore more revenue sources in order to rake in more funds to provide infrastructural facilities to its people.
To this end, revenue officers of the council have been told to gird up their loins and redouble their efforts to meet the new challenges.
This disclosure was made by the Council Chairman, Hon. Victor Ini Okon in an enlarged meeting with the Revenue Officers and Other Principal Officers of the Council.
Hon. Okon who lamented the short fall of internally generated revenue, observed that Oron is an ancient city endowed with abundant natural resources which are severally tapped by the people and therefore explained that revenue must be generated from these sources to meet the financial needs of the council.
He warned the revenue officers that the era of redundancy, absenteeism and diversion of government funds have gone, pointing out that each revenue officer would be appropriately assigned to generate targeted amount on monthly basis while a monitoring team would be commissioned to ascertain their effectiveness.
The Head of Administration Mr. Linus Ekpe said the success of many councils depend on internally generated fund and observed that Oron as an urban city with adequate natural resources should not be an exception.
He said the revenue officers have important roles to play in the revenue generation as the success of the council depends on them to meet the expectations of the people and urged them to work aggressively as the council would institute award for the best performing staff.
The Leader of the Legislative Council Elder Effiong E. Bassey enjoined the revenue staff to step up their performances while the Legislative Council would pass by-laws to back up the new revenue area explored.
