Relevant laws banning pit toilets and latrines in Uyo metropolis are to be enforced, says Mr Census Ekpu, Akwa Ibom commissioner for Environment and mineral resources.
He told newsmen Monday in Uyo that defaulters would be prosecuted. Ekpu noted that existing laws banning the operation of pit toilet and latrine were never enforced. He said the “old order” of routine house-to-house health inspection would be vigorously pursued to ensure cleanliness of homes and business premises.
The commissioner said many families no longer took serious, the issue of keeping their homes, premises and work places clean. He added that such attitude was responsible for some avoidable diseases and illnesses.
Ekpu blamed flooding in Uyo on the erection of buildings on natural waterways, warning that such structures would be pulled down. He said contract had been awarded to tackle the issue of erosion and flooding on major streets within Uyo metropolis. He said the ministry had noted with concern, areas of gully and coastal erosion, adding that documentation was ongoing for presentation to the Federal Ministry of environment.
